Statistics and Demographics
To
understand the importance of Internet marketing and Web site
promotion, you only need to look at the statistics and demographics
pertaining to the growth and usage of the Internet.
CommerceNet / Neilsen Internet Demographic Survey (10/98)
- The number of Internet users over the age of 16 in the U.S.
and Canada has reached 79 million up from 58 million just 9
months ago.
- In the same timeframe the number of people buying products and
services via the Web has hit 20 million, double what it was 9
months ago.
Relevant Knowledge Statistics (5/98)
- U.S. Web Universe grows to over 57 million users, that is a
growth of 1.6 million users since January 1998.
- The population of Web users continues to be skewed toward
males, composing 56 percent of the Web audience. In comparison,
only 30 percent of the U.S. population are men.
- Nearly 77 percent of all Web users are between the ages of 18
and 49. Users between the ages of 18-34 comprise 39 percent of
the Web universe, the highest composition of any demographic
group. In comparison, only 30 percent of the U.S. population are
ages 18-34.
- Web users are more educated than the average U.S. population.
Slightly more than half (51 percent) of all Web users have
college degrees, whereas only 24 percent of the U.S. population
have a college degree.
Forrester Research Statistics
- Nearly 50 percent of the U.S. population, or 135 million
people, will communicate via email by 2001. Fifteen percent of
the U.S. population (approximately 30 million adults 16 and
over) use email now.
- More than 3 billion "permitted" commercial email
messages were sent in 1997 and this number will grow to 250
billion by 2002, creating a market that will soar from less that
$8 million in 1997 to more than $950 million in 2002.

SeniorNet and Charles Schwab Inc. Statistics (10/98)
- Over 13 million adults over the age of 50 have Internet access
and this number is growing rapidly.
- 70 percent of U.S. seniors who own a home computer surf the
Web. Further, 40 percent of all U.S. adults over the age of 50
have a computer. Up from 29 percent in 1995.
